AI usage is happening, but it’s largely:

  • unstructured
  • and disconnected from firm-level policy

The gap isn’t capability. It’s governance.

Law firms don’t have a shortage of AI tools.

What they lack is a system for governing how those tools are used.

This is a fundamentally different problem.

It’s not about generating better outputs. It’s about ensuring those outputs are produced within a defined, defensible framework.

Without that framework:

  • usage becomes inconsistent across attorneys
  • firm policies remain theoretical rather than operational
  • risk exposure increases quietly over time
  • and there is no reliable way to audit or review AI-assisted work

This gap is easy to overlook because productivity gains are immediate, while governance failures are delayed.


Introducing the Governance Layer

What’s missing is a layer that sits above AI usage itself.

A governance layer.

Not another drafting tool. Not a better interface to existing models. Not a collection of prompts.

A governance layer is responsible for:

  • structuring how AI is used across the firm
  • linking AI interactions to matters, clients, and users
  • applying firm-defined policies to each interaction
  • maintaining a traceable record of AI-assisted work
  • enabling review, oversight, and accountability

In other words, it turns AI usage from an individual activity into a governed system.

Governance makes AI usage defensible

The goal is not to restrict AI.

It’s to make its usage structured, consistent, and reviewable.

When AI is governed properly:

  • attorneys can move quickly without improvising guardrails
  • firms can define and enforce how AI should be used
  • outputs are shaped by context, not just prompts
  • and every interaction can be understood after the fact

This is what makes AI usage defensible—not just effective.

A shift in how firms think about AI

Most firms today are asking:

How can we use AI to work faster?

A more complete question is:

How do we use AI in a way that we can stand behind?

That shift, from capability to accountability, is where governance becomes essential.

Where this leads

As AI adoption continues, governance will move from optional to expected.

Firms that invest early in structured AI usage will have:

  • clearer internal standards
  • more consistent outputs
  • and greater confidence in how AI is being used across their practice

Firms that don’t may still move quickly—but without the same level of visibility or control.

The difference isn’t whether AI is used.

It’s whether that usage is intentional, structured, and defensible.
